Missing teeth can ruin the appearance of our smile, make chewing difficult, and cause your remaining teeth to shift. At Gulf Coast Dental Center, we offer a variety of excellent options for filling that gap. The most common solution is a dental bridge.
We use high quality dental porcelain to create restorations that match your existing teeth flawlessly. A traditional bridge is composed of one or more replacement teeth called pontics, which are permanently attached to dental crowns. The procedure is very similar to that of placing a single crown. The teeth adjacent to the gap are reduced and shaped to prepare them. The bridge is custom made, from an impression, which takes two or three weeks. When it is ready, your dentist will check the fit and appearance then permanently cement it in place. Your smile will look naturally beautiful, thanks to the exceptional cosmetic dentistry skills of Dr. Roy L Irons.
A traditional bridge is economical and fast, completed in less than a month. However, there are a few disadvantages. You will need to take a little extra time for oral hygiene, using special tools to clean under the pontic. Although the restoration is not susceptible to decay, the teeth supporting it are. Bridges have an average lifespan of about ten years, and decay in the abutment teeth is one of the most common reasons for failure.
Today we have another option for supporting a dental bridge. Dental implants are small cylinders, made of titanium, which are placed in the jawbone. They replace the roots of missing teeth, supporting replacement ones in the most natural way possible. Just two or three implants are usually sufficient to support a dental bridge. With this option, there is no alteration to your healthy teeth, and no risk of decay causing the restoration to fail. You can enjoy full chewing efficacy and a beautiful smile, without any extra time or effort spent on oral hygiene. Implant supported bridges and other restorations require the same level of care as real teeth.
