Traditional options for replacing missing teeth include fixed bridges and full or partial removable dentures. Although these are good options, we now have an even better option. Dental implants provide a permanent solution for missing teeth. For most patients, they are the best option because they are stable, yet require no alteration to healthy teeth. We utilize the latest technology to provide great results with a comfortable process.
The most common type of dental implant is called root form. It is a small piece of titanium, similar in size and shape to a tooth root. A single implant topped with a specially designed porcelain crown can replace one tooth. Two or more implants topped with a dental bridge can replace several teeth at once.
The entire process takes several months to complete. It begins with a gentle, minimally invasive surgery to place the implants in the jawbone. Over the next three to six months, the jawbone grows around, and fuses with, the titanium. This process is called osseointegration. A temporary restoration is provided for esthetics to facilitate proper eating and speech during the healing process.
When osseointegration is complete, a small connector called an abutment is attached to the implant, and the new crown or bridge is permanently attached. Implant supported restorations look and feel like natural teeth. They are completely stable, and require the same oral hygiene as natural teeth.
Denture wearers can benefit from the stability of dental implants with minimal time or expense. Mini implants are approximately half the diameter of the traditional style. They are placed in the jawbone with a similar procedure, though it is less invasive because no incision is required. Usually four to six mini dental implants are sufficient to stabilize an entire denture plate. There is typically no waiting period; dentures can be attached the same day the implants are placed.
Either type of implant will give you a beautiful smile, and full functionality with good oral hygiene and regular dental care. If you are looking for a great way to replace missing teeth, call Gulf Coast Dental Center at (228) 863-6413
