Roy L Irons DDS, a native of Corinth, Mississippi, earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Tougaloo College in 1972 and his dental degree from the University of Iowa in 1976. Following graduation, he spent the next four years as active military in the United States Navy, serving as a General Dentist in Gulfport, Mississippi; Afterward he spent the next twenty years in the Reserves in Pensacola, Florida; Millington, Tennessee; Okinawa, Japan; and Rota, Spain. After completing his active service in the Navy and the Reserves, he retired as a U.S. Navy Captain. In 1980, Dr. Irons then returned to the Gulf Coast to establish his highly successful dental practice, the Gulf Coast Dental Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, providing much needed high-quality dental care and treatment options in a part of the country often overlooked.
Irons became a leader in dentistry in Mississippi, with professional engagements as forensic odontologist for Harrison County and center dentist with the Gulfport Job Corps. Dr. Irons’ distinguished career has included active service in a number of national and local professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, National Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Mississippi Dental Association, the Mississippi Dental Society, and the Jamaica Dental Association. Additionally, Dr. Irons achieved the professional distinction of Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Dentistry (DABFD). Additionally, Irons is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of Tougaloo College and of the National Dental Association. In 2010 Irons was elected president-elect of the National Dental Association. He served as President of National Dental Association in 2012.
Dr. Irons has also served on a number of other national and local boards, including the Mississippi Dental Society where he served as president from 1980-1982 and board chairman from 1982-1984; American Cancer Society/Harrison County; Tougaloo College National Alumni Association where he served as vice president from 1984-1986 and president from 1986-1988; St. Mark United Methodist Church; Union Planters National Bank; and UniCare Home Health. Fulfilling a deep commitment to his community and to improving the quality of life for others, Dr. Irons’ service as a volunteer includes his role as dental consultant to the Jackson County Citizens for Child Development in Pascagoula, MS; Scoutmaster/Troop 305 Pine Burr Area Council; Commissioner, Mississippi State Port at Gulfport and as dental consultant with Mississippi Action for Progress.
Dr. Irons maintains an ongoing commitment to the level of personal and professional development that will ensure that not only his skills and knowledge, but also those of his staff and colleagues, remain at the forefront of modern techniques and quality care. He joined the faculty of the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry in 1976 as a part-time instructor and continues to serve as an instructor with the faculty of the UMC Community Dentistry Department as well. Dr. Irons’ current professional licensures include the National Board of Dental Examiners (1977); Mississippi State Board of Dental Examiners (1977); Tennessee Board of Dentistry (1981); and Jamaica Dental Council (1991).
Dr. Irons has received numerous awards recognizing his professional and personal contributions and achievements, from organizations that include the Tom Joyner Foundation; National Dental Association; National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education Distinguished Alumni; Who’s Who National Registry; Mississippi Gulf Coast Blues Commission; and the Tougaloo College National Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
Dr. Irons is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity as well as the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. He is also a 33rd degree mason.
Dr. Irons is married (Judy) and the father of two from a previous marriage—Shunda and the late Roy L Irons II.
